The FDA announced Wednesday that it has approved Eli Lilly's dual GIP and GLP-1 agonist tirzepatide for chronic weight management. Specifically, the weekly injectable medication will be marketed under the name Zepbound for adult patients with obesity, or for those who are overweight and have at least one weight-related condition.

"In light of increasing rates of both obesity and overweight in the US, today's approval addresses an unmet medical need," commented John Sharretts, director of the division of diabetes, lipid disorders and obesity in the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. Tirzepatide has been cleared in the US as a treatment for diabetes since 2022 under the name Mounjaro

The latest FDA decision was based on the Phase III SURMOUNT-1 and SURMOUNT-2 trials. Results from SURMOUNT-1, which included about 2500 participants, demonstrated that at the highest dose of 15mg, patients taking Zepbound lost an average 48 pounds, while at the lowest dose of 5mg, they shed 34 pounds on average. By contrast, participants who received placebo lost 7 pounds (for more, see ViewPoints: ADA 2023 – Tirzepatide study lead investigator says weight loss in type 2 diabetes and ensuing health benefits now a 'SURMOUNT'-able goal). List price of $1060 per month.

Eli Lilly said Zepbound should be available in the US by the end of the year in six doses, and carry a list price of about $1060 for a month's supply. Zepbound is the latest entrant into the field of GLP-1 agonists that already includes Novo Nordisk's semaglutide, which is marketed under the names Ozempic for diabetes and Wegovy for weight loss. Eli Lilly said the list price for its drug is about 20% lower than Wegovy

Mike Mason, president of Eli Lilly's diabetes and obesity unit, stated that "broader access to [weight loss] medicines is critical, which is why Lilly is committed to working with healthcare, government and industry partners to ensure people who may benefit from Zepbound can access it.

According to the company, people who are commercially insured with coverage for Zepbound may be eligible to pay as low as $25 for a one-month or three-month prescription. Those who are commercially insured without coverage for Zepbound may be eligible to pay as low as $550 for a one-month prescription.

Eli Lilly reported earlier this month that Mounjaro garnered sales of $1.4 billion in the third quarter, up from $187.3 million in the prior year, and surpassing estimates by about $100 million. At the time, Bloomberg Intelligence analysts Sam Fazeli and John Murphy suggested that nothing comes close "to matching Mounjaro's importance to the company's near-term earnings.

All-time bestseller?

Zepbound's approval further establishes Eli Lilly as a formidable competitor to Novo Nordisk in the budding market for weight-loss treatments, with some analysts suggesting it could become one of the best-selling drugs in history. A FirstWord survey from July of 150 US physicians found that nearly all saw an increase in the number of patients seeking treatment for obesity over the past 12 months, although payer resistance had set up a notable barrier to access. FirstWord is working on a new physician's survey, with data to be released in the coming days.

Guggenheim analyst Seamus Fernandez said "we think [Zepbound] has a very, very strong shot at being the biggest [selling] drug of all time; obviously competing very closely with Novo Nordisk's Ozempic and Wegovy.

He noted that the GLP-1 category "for sure, will be the largest selling pharmaceutical market of all time," with the main challenge being reimbursement. "That being said, we do have some really important data coming this weekend from Novo Nordisk's…SELECT study, and that could really prove out…the benefits of [Wegovy] for patients who have high cardiovascular risk, so this may turn out to be more of a cardiovascular drug at the end of the day.

The Period Dictionary

Best Global Creative Idea y PR Breakthrough 2020.

Patient influencers..."the power".

These influencers advertise everything from hair growth vitamins and flat tummy teas to charitable endorsements and ‘not to be missed’ investment opportunities. Influencing has touched almost every aspect of life, but is there a role for this type of communication within one of the most highly regulated industries: healthcare?

Patient Influencers: The Next Frontier in Direct-to-Consumer Pharmaceutical MarketingMonitoring

Erin Willis, PhD, MPHcorresponding author and Marjorie Delbaere, PhD

"Social media influencers are becoming an increasingly popular strategic communication tactic used across industry verticals, including entertainment, fashion, and beauty, to engage directly with consumers. Pharmaceutical companies have also recently entered the social media marketing arena and—within the bounds of governmental regulations—have found ways to build relationships directly with patients using covert persuasion tactics like partnering with social media influencers.

Due to consumers’ negative perceptions of pharmaceutical companies, it makes sense that new marketing tactics are being used to establish and improve relationships with consumers. Previous research well documents the ethical dilemmas of direct-to-consumer advertising, and there is recent burgeoning literature on online covert marketing tactics. The academic and medical literature, however, is behind in regard to social media influencers used in health and medicine.

This paper highlights and defines terms used in industry practice, and also calls for more investigation and sets forward a research agenda. As consumers spend more time online and patients continue to consult social media for health information, it is important that this new marketing trend does not go unnoticed."

Patient influencers are growing in number and becoming a powerful entity in the healthcare space. Often falling into the bracket of ‘micro-influencers’ – who gain between 1,000 and 100,000 followers – patient influencers are online advocates for others living with their condition. Unlike most influencers who are seeking paid brand deals, these online personalities are more likely to be driven by a goal to help improve the lives of others by sharing their unique journeys, experiences and opinions.

Matt Eagles, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease at just seven years old, has taken an active role as an advocate in the Parkinson’s community. Matt can often be found diving headfirst into adrenaline-fuelled activities, from completing exhilarating wing walks to riding the world’s fastest zip line. Matt is sharing his inspirational story online, encouraging and empowering other patients to live their lives to the fullest. His work has helped him advocate for greater awareness and understanding of Parkinson’s disease in the public, as well as improving knowledge of relevant treatments, such as deep brain stimulation.

Patient influencers offer a unique channel through which to speak directly to patients as a trusted source. As the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries strive to become more patient-centric, acknowledging and celebrating the power of patient influencers, such as Matt Eagles, is vital, but it is equally critical that this communication channel remains authentic, compliant and human.

USA: Cost Plus Drugs..."radical price transparency".

Cost Plus Drugs, the pharmacy backed by billionaire investor and reality TV star Mark Cuban, promised radical price transparency when it launched in January.

Ver

Cuban pledged to price every product exactly the same way: consumers would pay the manufacturer’s

cost, plus a 15% markup, a $3 handling fee for the pharmacist and $5 for shipping

The company, which has gained a reported 1.2 million customers, sells more than 1,000 generic drugs. Take the cancer therapy

Gleevec, which has a list price for patients of $9,600

The Cost Plus price? $47.

While about 80% of prescription drugs are off-patent, roughly 80% of the $365 billion that the U.S. spends annually on pharmaceuticals goes toward branded drugs.

When the business launched, Cuban vowed that he would eventually add brand-name meds to his site.

But if the Dallas Mavericks owner and “Shark Tank” investor has made significant inroads in that space, he’s been quiet about it. The question thus becomes whether Cuban & Co. can eventually sell more expensive medicines, such as specialty biologics, for the same terms under which he’s selling older pills.

Harold Paz, EVP of health sciences at Stony Brook University of Medicine and former chief medical officer at Aetna, referred to Cuban’s healthcare foray as a “disruptive experiment.” But when it comes to delivering low prices on newer medicines, Paz is keeping his expectations in check.

I do think it offers a promise, given where we are today and the opportunities we have to create a much better alignment with discovery, innovation, value and ultimately improving lives,” Paz said at a recent forum tackling topics including drug pricing.

Today’s healthcare system is notoriously fragmented. The actual price paid by the patient is a composite of multiple – and often siloed – interests. They range from manufacturers to wholesalers and from pharmacies to pharmacy benefit managers and insurers. Removing layers from this equation, in addition to upping transparency, is where Cuban hopes to make an impact.

Palabras: " Evergreening "

Background
: Branded drugs contribute disproportionately to high prescription drug spending. Pharmaceutical companies utilize patent extension "evergreening" techniques that contribute to high drug costs.

Aims: This article describes various patent extension techniques and analyzes the tactic of combining generic drugs with branded drugs, using metformin combinations for diabetes treatment as a case study. It examines the argument that FDCs enhance adherence and compares the cost of several branded fixed-dose combinations with the cost of their individual constituents.

Results: "Evergreening" patent extension tactics include the sequential release of different formulations, minor dosing changes, and fixed-dose combinations (FDCs). A "new use" provides an opportunity for a company to re-patent, rebrand, and remarket one drug for multiple indications. It is unclear whether or not FDCs enhance adherence. Branded fixed-dose combinations generally cost far more than their individual constituents. FDCs that combine metformin with other drugs are an exception, often costing the same as the non-metformin component.

Discussion: Patent extension tactics increase drug costs while providing little additional benefit to patients. Minor alterations in formulations or dosing may provide no clinical benefits. Many FDCs are expensive and fail to provide cost-justified improvements in clinical outcomes, compared to equivalent generic drugs that would save money while delivering an equal standard of care. Combining newer hypoglycemic drugs with metformin, a gold-standard, generic, inexpensive drug, does not appear to cost more than individual constituents but offers no clinical advantage over metformin alone.

Conclusion
: Evergreening tactics should be reined in, as they represent significant cost to the healthcare system and to patients. Physicians and other prescribers should avoid prescribing FDCs, or slightly tweaked "new" drugs. Patented drug combinations generate profit without innovation.

Simon Griem: Using digital engagement metrics to optimise and drive salesforce effectiveness

Over a century ago, the US retailer John Wanamaker famously grumbled that ‘half of my advertising spend is wasted, but I don’t know which half’.

Ver:

Mario Benedetti: Lecciones de Marketing / Arturo Larrainzar Garijo*

With so much changing over the last two years, good digital engagement plays a more important role than ever in optimising the effectiveness of a company’s sales approach, and this can all be precisely measured to track its return on investment (ROI).

But how do you do it?

In the final article of this series, we will explain how to build robust measurement into your digital engagement strategies to assess impact and drive your sales operation forward.

_Benchmarking for success

As shown in the previous article, a data-driven digital engagement strategy starts with a granular understanding and segmentation of your customer base which then feeds through into a highly-tailored and personalised engagement approach.

To measure its impact, you need to benchmark your starting position with the same level of precision. This means understanding who the customer is within a given disease area, what factors are shaping their behaviours and the wider prescribing landscape, what stage each customer is at in terms of their relationship with your brand/therapy/organisation, what their channel preferences and digital attributes are, and ideally their content engagement history.

For each individual customer and segment, it is then important to establish what key impact metrics will determine performance. This will include prior analysis of prescribing and sales data broken down by key accounts, as well as an assessment of where each customer is on the adoption ladder, an understanding of the product penetration/share and competitive landscape (including formulary status), and metrics showing the previous online engagement activity.

Clearly, the customer’s history and status will influence both your engagement strategy and the measurement, although a consistent approach is key. If you are delivering a highly-personalised strategy with tailored messaging with an optimum channel mix to existing or established customers, then the result will be that customers engage more readily and deeply with your content – and the usual engagement metrics will be the first critical indicators of progress.

As the activity rolls out and is continually optimised based on these metrics, this engagement will lead to improved impact in terms of deepening relationships, greater interest in your value proposition, and ultimately a shift in prescribing behaviour across the customer segments. Thus, your measurement framework needs to reflect those strategic goals and align with the sales and marketing strategy by segment.

_Measuring quality, not volume

Precision engagement will help you move from ‘share of voice’ to ‘quality of voice’. For example, we regularly see this approach change average email open rates of, say, 15% for a generic email relating to promotional content to 50%+ across segmented programmes. This is always a strong initial indicator that the optimised approach is performing.

Additionally, we look at the impact of channel activity performance within key customer accounts: are we seeing an even more significant uplift above the previously benchmarked levels of engagement within these groups?

Consistently high engagement with relevant, hyper-personalised digital content, measured over an extended period, suggests the foundations are laid for a deeper relationship with the customer. After all, it’s not unreasonable that if a customer recognises that your organisation provides them with tailored information that helps them perform their professional duties, it follows they are more likely to trust and consider your messages and data more favourably.

_Connecting with strategic goals

But how do you test that as a theory and measure the scale of the impact generated? This is where it is important to consider the optimal channel mix to start with and also benchmark against existing sales data with key customer accounts and segmentation.

Doing so means you can measure ROI from the optimal channel mix and see what the digital activity delivers above the sales trend line. For example, are you seeing a demonstrable change in the sales curve following the activity? Are sales teams reporting a shift in key customers’ attitudes that suggests they are further along the adoption ladder?

There also has to be an aligned and integrated approach between KAM performance and tailored digital engagement and metrics to drive the optimal salesforce effectiveness.

Using the enriched data and 360-degree view of key customer segments to continually optimise the mix of channels and engagement generates a powerful feedback loop. This then enables and informs customer engagement activity to focus forensically on a customer’s needs and interests.

Similarly, sales/KAM engagement outcomes with customers will inform digital steps and trigger different messages and actions/content.

Conclusion

At a macro level, by using the right datasets to give you that 360-degree view, combined with an agile approach to creating target segments for activity ‘on the fly’, it is relatively straightforward to measure the ROI and tactical effectiveness and impact of all channels – including the digital engagement activity. This can help you monitor not only a sustained uplift in reach, frequency and penetration into key customer segments, but also demonstrable changes in sales performance.

At a micro level, continually testing and measuring changes in customer response will improve the quality of your data and insights into understanding interests and preferences to this. This, in turn, will improve and accelerate how your activity moves customers up the adoption ladder.

By combining the right data sets, Wilmington Healthcare can help clients to measure the contribution their activity is making to strategic goals and quantify its return on investment. Understanding this, as John Wanamaker recognised all those years ago, is a vital part of maximising sales growth for the future. (Ver)

Palabras: Brand safety / Brand Suitability...

 Brand Suitability

Metaverse as many of us know it, is a virtual world that enables us to live in deal with things and places within that world. What is more interesting is the ways Metaverse can be applied in various fields to help the world be a better world. The idea of metaverse itself has been around for a while and has been used in a few well-known applications. Lately, many have started to consider it to make it a part of their business, like when Zuckerberg has announced his plans to build the “Metaverse”.  Ver

Here are a few ways we can benefit from metaverse in the health world.

  • _Medical Training
  • _Surgical Procedures
  • _Doctors’ Appointments And Consultation
  • _Pain Management
  • _Physical therapy
  • _Metaverse And Digital Marketing

Pharma is entering the metaverse: 3 drugmaker CIOs weigh in

Chief information officers at pharmaceutical companies say the metaverse could soon play a role in their business practices,

The Wall Street Journal reported Jan. 10.

The Wall Street Journal interviewed three drugmakers to weigh in on this new digital frontier, an immersive, virtual reality-powered world.

Paul von Autenried, CIO of New York City-based Bristol-Myers Squibb, told The Wall Street Journal that scientists would benefit from the metaverse.

"We have scientists doing real work in laboratories with beakers and chemicals, and their ability to do their work and free up their hands is very valuable," he said.

"The metaverse for me triggers an avalanche of thoughts and technology in the space of augmented reality and sort of technology that lies at the intersection of human physical interaction and what could be done with digital innovation."

Dave Williams, CIO of Kenilworth, N.J.-based Merck & Co., said the possibilities of the metaverse are endless.

"We've got some really good examples in our environment of how we leverage those existing technologies, especially during the pandemic, to connect experts who are in very different parts of the world,

Mr. Williams told the Journal. "I see that can be a huge opportunity in terms of connecting people, learning, development."

Mark Spykerman, CIO of Conshohocken, Pa.-based AmerisourceBergen, concurred that the metaverse would play a role in business.
