As it posted disappointing sales and earnings for the first quarter, AstraZeneca has announced that chief executive David Brennan is to retire, amid pressure from disgruntled shareholders.
Mr Brennan (pictured) will be replaced by chief financial officer Simon Lowth from June 1 on an interim basis. It was also revealed that Leif Johansson will succeed Louis Schweitzer as non-executive chairman three months earlier than previously announced, in order to lead the selection process for Mr Brennan’s successor "including both internal and external candidates".
Mr Brennan's decision has come as something of a surprise given that just a week ago, he was reported as saying that he was "plugged in" as boss, despite rumours that a number of major shareholders had questioned whether he was the man to lead the company as it battles to deal with several recent pipeline setbacks. However, he now says that "after more than six years as CEO of this great company, I have decided that now is the right time to step down and allow a new leader to take the reins".
Mr Schweitzer said: “David has led AstraZeneca’s business with skill, integrity and courage during a period of enormous change for the pharmaceutical industry and for the company". He added that "we fully understand and respect David’s decision to retire and thank him for his selfless leadership".

Redes Sociales Vs Periodismo...

FORBES: Social Media Predictions 2012
Three trends and tools to watch in the coming year:
- -From Checking In To Cashing In: Geo-Gaming
Geo-location has been an important marketing tool for a few years, but in 2012 it will become more personal and more transactional, especially in social-media marketing. This is a game-changer for retailers because it enables them to put potential consumers in the context of time and place and more effectively influence purchase intent. This type of influence is a reason I see social media as a bridge to commerce because it’s where marketers build a relationship with customers. (…)
- -Facebook: Gateway To The Web
Would it surprise anyone to think Facebook will become the overlay of the Internet experience? It may not happen in 2012 but it certainly will in our lifetimes. Facebook is what Ma Bell once was, a utility with which few people could conduct their daily lives. It’s almost impossible to not use the web these days, and it’s becoming less possible to use it without Facebook.(...)
- -Perpetuating The Personal
Brands in 2012 must create a social world of personalization. Facebook has built a model for this. Its “pages” function enables brands to engage customers on a virtual island and have a theme party of their choosing. If the guests are into Huggies, the page can be about potty training. Amex’s page/party theme can be about small business.(...)

Palabras: "Sexed up"
refers to making something more sexually appealing.
Since 2003 it has been used in the sense of making something more attractive than it really is by selective presentation; a modern update to the phrase "hyped up".
Variants include "sex it up".

VIOXX: La "cocina"... Naked capitalism: The case of Vioxx and Heart Disease
Yesterday I caught a lecture at Columbia given by statistics professor David Madigan, who explained to us the story of Vioxx and Merck. It’s fascinating and I was lucky to get permission to retell it here.
Disclosure
Madigan has been a paid consultant to work on litigation against Merck. He doesn’t consider Merck to be an evil company by any means, and says it does lots of good by producing medicines for people. According to him, the following
Yet Madigan’s own data strongly suggests that Merck was well aware of the fatalities resulting from Vioxx, a blockbuster drug that earned them $2.4b in 2003, the year before it “voluntarily” pulled it from the market in September 2004. What you will read below shows that the company set up standard data protection and analysis plans which they later either revoked or didn’t follow through with, they gave the FDA misleading statistics to trick them into thinking the drug was safe, and set up a biased filter on an Alzheimer’s patient study to make the results look better. They hoodwinked the FDA and the New England Journal of
.../...
Just as the financial system has to be changed to serve the needs of the people before the needs of the bankers, the drug trial system has to be changed to lower the incentives for cheating (and massive death tolls) just for a quick buck. As I mentioned before, it’s still not clear that they would have made less money, even including the penalties, if they had come clean in 2000. They made a bet that the fines they’d need to eventually pay would be smaller than the profits they’d make in the meantime. That sounds familiar to anyone who has been following the fallout from the credit crisis.
One thing that should be changed immediately: the clinical trials for drugs should not be run or reported on by the drug companies themselves. There has to be a third party which is in charge of testing the drugs and has the power to take the drugs off the market immediately if adverse effects (like CVT events) are found. Hopefully they will be given more power than risk firms are currently given in finance (which is none)- in other words, it needs to be more than reporting, it needs to be an active regulatory power, with smart people who understand statistics and do their own state-of-the-art analyses – although as we’ve seen above even just Stats 101 would sometimes do the trick.
