European Patients' Rights Day

Active Citizenship Network will celebrate the European Patients' Rights Day - which has reached its 18th edition - with a conference that will be held at the European Parliament in Brussels on 20 March from 16:30 to 18:30, kindly hosted by MEP Brando Benifei (S&D) and organised with the support of the MEPs Interest Group "European Patients' Rights & Cross-Border Healthcare".

Objectives of the event

-Highlight the issues of skill shortages, medical desertification, empowerment of healthcare professionals, and unmet patient needs in the upcoming elections.

-Acknowledge the vital role of all healthcare professionals.

-Encourage greater representation of these professionals at the European level.

-Promote a stronger alliance between health professionals and patients.

-Propose actionable insights for the upcoming European elections.

Origin & value of the European Patients’ Rights Day

In 2002, Active Citizenship Network (ACN), together with a group of European citizens organizations, drafted the European Charter of Patients’ Rights, which has been translated in 16 languages and includes the following 14 rights:

-the right to preventive measures;

-access care;

-information;

-consent;

-free choice;

-privacy and confidentiality;

-respect of patients’ time;

-observance of quality standards;

-safety;

-innovation;

-avoidance of unnecessary suffering and pain;

-personalized treatment;

-to complain;

-to receive compensation.

All these rights, based on the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union, are crucial for European citizens and healthcare services.

The majority of these rights were also embodied within the Council conclusions on Common values and principles in EU Health Systems adopted in June 2006.

Pfizer: La bolsa y...la vida/Vacuna COVID-19

“Today is a great day for science and humanity. The first set of results from our Phase 3 COVID-19 vaccine trial provides the initial evidence of our vaccine’s ability to prevent COVID-19,” said Dr. Albert Bourla, Pfizer Chairman and CEO.

“We are reaching this critical milestone in our vaccine development program at a time when the world needs it most with infection rates setting new records, hospitals nearing over-capacity and economies struggling to reopen. With today’s news, we are a significant step closer to providing people around the world with a much-needed breakthrough to help bring an end to this global health crisis. We look forward to sharing additional efficacy and safety data generated from thousands of participants in the coming weeks.”

After discussion with the FDA, the companies recently elected to drop the 32-case interim analysis and conduct the first interim analysis at a minimum of 62 cases. Upon the conclusion of those discussions, the evaluable case count reached 94 and the DMC performed its first analysis on all cases. The case split between vaccinated individuals and those who received the placebo indicates a vaccine efficacy rate above 90%, at 7 days after the second dose. This means that protection is achieved 28 days after the initiation of the vaccination, which consists of a 2-dose schedule. As the study continues, the final vaccine efficacy percentage may vary. The DMC has not reported any serious safety concerns and recommends that the study continue to collect additional safety and efficacy data as planned. The data will be discussed with regulatory authorities worldwide. (Más)

J&J: Targeting millennials moms

.

New moms will see a new and even gentler Johnson & Johnson Baby later this year. J&J is planning a refresh of its Johnson's baby products for millennial parents who want safety and transparency from brands, along with more healthy and natural products.

Todo sobre "millennials" en PHARMACOSERÍAS

The redesign and reformulation of the baby line updates both the products and the messaging.
A consumer marketing and advertising campaign, including a new tagline, is expected to launch in August, and two new products meant specifically for delicate newborn skin will be added.

One of the key product messages J&J will trumpet is that its baby products no longer have dyes or sulfates, and the company phased out parabens, phthalates and other preservatives several years ago. (...)

Digital marketing and communications will play an important role in the relaunch, and the company will use its BabyCenter online parenting community "as the engine," Alison Lewis, the global chief marketing officer at J&J Consumer, told analysts earlier this month.

"We will be able to give parents what they want, when they want and this is something that no one else can do, a huge competitive advantage for us," she said, adding that the idea around the Johnson's brand would reclaim "our safe, mild, gentle heritage and point of difference with powerful purpose and promise-based communication."

J&J’s baby care sales have declined over the past several years, finishing with $1.92 billion in sales for 2017, down from $2 billion in 2016 and $2.16 billion in 2015.

Some of the challenges have come from the rise of smaller private competitors that focus on natural or eco-friendly products such as the Honest Company, Earth Mama and retailer private label brands.(Más)

"In a recent poll of U.S. individuals 65 years old
and older who use medications,
researches found that 51% take at least
five different prescription drugs regularly,
and 1/4 take between 10 and 19 pills each day.
57% of those polled admit that they forget to take their medications.
Among those using five or more medications,
63% say they forget doses,
compared to 51% among those who take fewer medicines".

New designs for medication packages and plans for labels that are easier to understand aim to help people stick to their drug regimens. People accustomed to nagging from doctors and family members that they're not taking their medications properly may get some help from an unlikely source.

New designs for drug packages and plans for labels that are easier to understand aim to help people stick to their drug regimens.

New technologies include a bottle cap with a wireless chip that signals to patients if they are late in taking their medicine by triggering flashing lights and audible alerts.

Recent research has found that packaging pills in blister packs, rather than typical amber-colored vials, may be more likely to get patients to take their pills. Blister packs, in which each pill is enclosed in its own compartment marked with the day of the week, help remind people if they're up-to-date with their medications.

 Meanwhile, the jumble of consumer information that accompanies medications—which may include a bottle label, an information sheet stapled to the bag, a package insert from the drug manufacturer and another insert sometimes required by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration—makes it harder for patients to follow instructions.

 .../...

Over the course of a year, patients using the blister packs refilled their prescriptions five days sooner on average than those using bottles and stayed on their medication 22 days longer, the study found. A Novartis spokeswoman says the company introduced a 30-count blister pack for Diovan HCT in July, after piloting the product with Wal-Mart beginning in 2009. Novartis is considering using this type of packaging with other products, she says.

Hayden Bosworth, a professor of medicine at Duke University, says more research needs to be done. Studies, such as the Novartis analysis, are observational rather than randomized controlled trials, he says. And evidence needs to be gathered that the additional cost of using blister packs is worth any potential gain in drug-regimen adherence, he says. Dr. Bosworth says he is currently working with MeadWestvaco to conduct a randomized controlled clinical trial that assesses the benefits of blister packs. The company estimates that blister packs cost as much as three times the price of a traditional pill bottle. (Más)

Para_Pharma_Lia: Pastillero "adherencia".

 Wellness´is a concept so rich with possibility that is shifting from perceived luxury to being considered a fundamental human right.
Spending on wellness has doubled in the last decade, and will continue to grow at an impresive rate.

El viejo ecosistema...

En el nuevo...
Yo, el paciente, en el centro...

From influencers to platforms, the wellness ecosystem is expanding. But the consumer remains firmly at the center. When asked who has the greatest amount of responsability for wellness, the first answer is ´me´ (ahead of doctors, government or brans). Overall, we see that consumers have a new confidence and self-belief when it comes to managing their health.(Más)

The Truth About Wellness / McCann

Bayer is already under fire in other markets over new-generation contraceptives. France will stop reimbursing prescription costs of some types from March, after a woman sued Bayer over alleged side effects.

CSS said on Wednesday it supported its client in her claim against Bayer and is acting as a joint plaintiff. The health insurer is demanding payment from Bayer to cover medical costs.

Swiss media reported the young woman suffered from a pulmonary embolism that left her severely disabled a few weeks after being prescribed the pill. The cost of medical treatment has amounted to some 600,000 Swiss francs ($648,600), according to reports.

A Bayer spokesman said the company could not comment on pending lawsuits but added the Yasmin group of pills had a positive risk-benefit profile based on extensive scientific data. He also said the decision which contraceptive to take rests with the patient and her doctor.

Bayer has so far agreed to pay a combined $750 million to settle 3,490 legal claims in the United States that Yasmin caused blood clots, and such injuries are alleged in a further 3,800 pending U.S. cases.

U.S. health regulators have added warnings to the labels on the pills to show they may raise the risk of blood clots.

Revenues from the Yasmin group of birth-control pills, Bayer's second-best selling pharmaceutical brand, are also in decline because of cheaper generic copies that are for sale in United States.
