Des_"empoderamiento" de "Power Balance".

En los últimos cuatro años, nada ha podido evitar que una joven empresa fundada en California por dos hermanos aficionados al surf y otros deportes -Josh y Troy Rodarmel- venda cientos de miles de ejemplares de un burdo engaño: una pulsera de silicona con propiedades cuasi milagrosas que cuesta entre 30 y 42 euros (según el modelo). Con ayuda de un sinfín de famosos pagados para ello (deportistas como Guti, Shaquille O'Neil o Barrichello, entre otros), la empresa Power Balance ha logrado que cale su mensaje: con solo llevar la pulsera en la muñeca uno experimenta una mejora de fuerza, flexibilidad y equilibrio (ahí es nada).


Hasta el lunes. Ese día, la web de noticias TNZ (especializada en filtrar noticias de famosos y todo lo que les rodea, incluida la querencia de algunos de ellos por estas pulseras) adelantaba el acuerdo privado que habrían alcanzado los abogados de los californianos y los de los consumidores que les han denunciado por publicidad engañosa: 57,5 millones de dólares (42,4 millones de euros).

En España, las pulseras Power Balance desembarcaron con fuerza en 2009. El asalto se hizo por medio de comerciales que optaron por una agresiva estrategia de patrocinios de eventos deportivos como el Madrid Open de Tenis o el maratón de Madrid, de programas de televisión (Fama, Gran Hermano) e incluso de eventos culturales. Las pulseras, que se venden en farmacias o gimnasios, conquistaron a deportistas y a famosos de todo tipo, desde la Infanta Elena a Belén Esteban o a políticos como Leire Pajín e Ignacio González. Power Balance en PHARMACOSERÍAS

Power (Balance) va perdiendo power...

Aunque la multa de la Junta de Andalucía ha dado la razón a las voces que clamaban contra el timo de la pulsera, desde Facua-Consumidores consideran que la sanción es mínima y exigen que la cantidad a pagar por la empresa Power Balance España, cuya sede se encuentra en Marbella (Málaga).

Facua, que ha denunciado que 'Power Balance España' presumía en abril de haber vendido unas 300.000 pulseras, lo que supondría unos ingresos de en torno a 10 millones de euros, considera así que "la ridiculez de la sanción es una nueva muestra del desinterés de las autoridades de salud y consumo andaluzas por la protección de los consumidores".

"Lejos de tener un efecto negativo para la empresa denunciada, este tipo de resoluciones sólo perjudica a los consumidores, al provocar que muchas empresas entiendan que pueden cometer fraudes con impunidad", ha proseguido. Además, sostiene que el dinero que genera en unas horas la venta de 500 pulseras "son suficientes para pagar la sanción". (Ver)

Power Balance: Hasta en las antípodas pierde el poder...y es obligada a "desengañar".

La ACCC (Australian Competition and Consumer Commission) ha instado a la empresa a:

• eliminar la publicidad engañosa de su sitio web y el embalaje
• publicar un aviso informando a los consumidores que sus proclamas no pudieron ser confirmadas
• devolverle el dinero a los consumidores que se consideren engañados y
• quitar las palabras “tecnología de rendimiento” de la propia banda

Esta última probablemente significará que la compañía tendrá que eliminar el stock de bandas existente en Australia y crear nuevas pulseras para este país.

La ACCC también ha indicado que los minoristas que sigan vendiendo la banda en su actual forma (con las inscripciones en el embalaje y la pulsera) lo harán bajo su propia responsabilidad. El fallo podría ser el primer paso para hacer mella en el enorme éxito de este caro placebo en Australia.

La anotación requerida en la página web de las pulseras se puede ver únicamente en la página de Australia (en la parte inferior), mientras que en la página principal este país ha desaparecido del mapa.

Hologramas / Rubén Nuñez, "héroe del silencio"...

La holografía vivió, recientemente, su momentos de gloria con el "bluff"/fraude de las "Power Balance".

Años atrás (recordar es...), esa técnología se hizo "arte".
Uno de sus principales creadores, Rubén Nuñez, precursor del cinetismo venezolano (luego consagrado en Jesús Soto), falleció hace pocos días (6/1/2012) en Caracas. Me entero ahora, a mi llegada al país.

Rubén Nuñez, escribe Bélgica Rodriguez para su Homenaje (1950-1990):

"...se alejó de la pintura y la escultura, para construir estructuras de arte donde el espacio tridimensional virtual es protagonista fundamental. Pero lo más importante es que este espacio tridimensional no está resuelto, precisamente, en objetos escultóricos per sé, aún cuando consideremos los vidrios-cristales como tal, sino que se presenta ante el espectador como una no realidad, es decir, existe sólo en el momento de la percepción del otro. Es casi un enfrentamiento visual y espiritual entre dos entes: la obra y el espectador."

Su conocimiento de diseño industrial y de la tecnología del vidrio (que estudia en Murano/Italia) le llevó a concebir la botella de Ron Añejo Pampero Especial, conocida como la “caneca”, todavía hoy utilizada para envasar este famosa bebida venezolana.

Mis primeros contactos con él tienen lugar en Caracas (Galeria de Arte Nacional, 1977) en exposición que contó con su presencia. Posteriormente fué el descubrimiento de su obra en Paris, a un costado del Centro Pompidou, en el "Musee de l´holographie" (ya desaparecido y en busca de nueva ubicación)

La última, más reciente, su exposición en Hannover (2000), en el marco del polémico pabellón venezolano diseñado por el arquitecto Fruto Vivas donde tuve ocasión de conversar con él, en compañia de mis hijos (Fernando y Ariadna) ...

De él recuerdo...sus silencios.



La holografía ha sido "recurso" de uso frecuente en la publicidad y como hologramas de seguridad por la industria farmacéutica.

Big Pharma: The game.

What if you had it in your power to rid the world of disease, to improve the lives of millions, to ease suffering and cure the sick… and earn a tidy profit?

As the head of your own Pharmaceutical Conglomerate you have this power resting in your hands. Will you use it for good? Being totally altruistic may not be the best business plan. The uncomfortable truth (is there an ointment for that?) is that some remedies are more profitable than others and illness is good for business.

Welcome to the world of Big Pharma!

The pharma industry divides opinions on its morality, but what has always stood out is the fact that in this business, profit is king.

I do not envy pharma executives – who are answerable to eager shareholders and investors none-too-keen on a disappointing set of financial results – but I am nonetheless curious about their work, the pressures they come under, and the industry’s ethics.

So I see the new strategy game ‘Big Pharma’, from independent computer game developer Twice Circled, as a chance to get a more light-hearted feel for that world. I can learn from the safety of my own home, without having to worry about my job security or any crippling lawsuits that might come my way from poisoning my customers.

For a sense of what the game is all about, think The Sims, but in the pharma world. Your goal is to import compounds, discover their active ingredients, create the right concentrations and mixtures – and then of course sell the optimised pills for maximum profit.

Firing up the colourful game for the first time, you have your hand held nicely through a tutorial that serves as a good introduction to the mechanics of the factory and production line.

Accompanied by some very pleasing animations and sound effects (not to mention an official soundtrack), I was quickly able to arrange the machinery and conveyor belts in the right order to produce my new company’s first drug – I chose a headache cure – and also to name it, which is a fun touch.

Like their real life counterparts, these virtual pills have benefits but also side effects, and the job of the God-like player/pharma executive is to use all of the tools in the company’s arsenal to get the balance just right: maximising the positive effects and minimising the negative.

The gameplay is fairly simple, but rewarding; once you get a feel for creating drugs, it is really a question of upscaling the production and reinvesting the money into larger factories and better technologies to create new and more lucrative cures. It is satisfying to watch your virtual drug empire grow and the profits alongside it, while rival firms look on enviously.

But they will only do so if you get things right. The artificial intelligence pharma companies generated by the computer game are also constantly working on their own competing products to your drug blockbusters. If they do a better job of it, your sales will fall. The fact that you have to constantly adapt to their moves keeps the game challenging and adds incentive to keep playing. (Más)

Novartis cuts uneasy 20-year ties to Roche with $20.7 bln voting stake sale

ZURICH, Nov 4 (Reuters) - Novartis AG  said on Thursday it would sell its nearly one-third voting stake in Roche  back to its cross-town rival for $20.7 billion, disentangling the two pharma companies that had been linked by the investment for two decades. 

 The deal extricates Roche from ownership ties to a major competitor with strategic vetoing power, though it has kept a passive role in the face of powerful Roche family shareholders.

The transaction sent Roche shares to a record high. By mid-morning, they were up 2.4%, while Novartis shares were up 0.2%. 

Novartis has agreed to sell 53.3 million Roche bearer shares for $388.99 (356.93 Swiss francs) per share, a price that reflects the volume-weighted average of the Roche non-voting equity certificates over the 20 trading days to Nov. 2, Novartis said in a statement.

In a separate statement, Roche said it will use debt to finance what it called a "disentanglement of two competitors" and plans to reduce its capital by cancelling the repurchased shares to regain full strategic flexibility.

A Roche spokesperson told Reuters the company's balance sheet remained strong after the deal. "We can continue our M&A strategy as before, there are no limitations there." 

Novartis' involvement started in 2001, when Swiss activist investor Martin Ebner, known for orchestrating the merger that created banking giant UBS, offered his Roche stake to its cross-town rival out of frustration over rebuffed proposals. 

Ebner at the time had amassed the holding in Roche to push for strategic change but ran into opposition from the founding families that control the group. 

Roche shareholders will vote on the plan at an extraordinary general meeting on Nov 26

Novartis Chief Executive Vas Narasimhan said now was the right time to monetise the investment. 

"Today’s announcement is consistent with our strategic focus and we intend to deploy the proceeds from the transaction in line with our capital allocation priorities," he said.

NOVARTIS' GAIN 

Novartis, which has taken a hands-off role as Roche investor without a director representing it on the board, said it will report a gain from the stake sale of approximately $14 billion. 

It said the investment acquired for around $5 billion in 2001 and 2003 had delivered recurring earnings contributions and cumulative dividends of over $6 billion. 

As of Wednesday's close, Roche's shares had a run of more than 19% so far this year for a share price gain of about 160% since Novartis' appearance on the stock register in mid-2001. 

Jefferies analysts said the transaction should provide an immediate 7% boost to earnings per share and for now put to rest lingering speculation that Roche could be eyeing larger acquisitions. 

For Novartis, the deal further simplifies its structure after the maker of drugs against diseases such as arthritis, cancer and multiple sclerosis in 2019 spun off the Alcon eye care business and launched a strategic review of generic-drug division Sandoz. 

Roche said all holders of Roche equity securities would benefit from the earnings accretion following the transaction. It confirmed its 2021 outlook and said it was aiming to increase its 2021 dividend. 

The transaction will not result in a change of control as the founding families' shareholder pool already held the majority of the votes, it said. Its voting power will increase to around 67.5% following the deal. 

Roche said the Swiss takeover board had exempted the pool from the obligation to submit a mandatory offer. The free float will increase to 24.9% from 16.6%. (Ver)
