Ecosistema del Bienestar/"Wellness"..según McCann.
Wellness´is a concept so rich with possibility that is shifting from perceived luxury to being considered a fundamental human right.
Spending on wellness has doubled in the last decade, and will continue to grow at an impresive rate.
El viejo ecosistema...

From influencers to platforms, the wellness ecosystem is expanding. But the consumer remains firmly at the center. When asked who has the greatest amount of responsability for wellness, the first answer is ´me´ (ahead of doctors, government or brans). Overall, we see that consumers have a new confidence and self-belief when it comes to managing their health.(Más)

The Truth About Wellness / McCann

Joe Jimenez/CEO Novartis: "...more money on R&D and less on sales and marketing"
Swiss drug maker Novartis AG is struggling with a raft of
challenges, shared across the industry. Its best-selling drug Diovan, which
treats high blood pressure, has lost patent protection and the number of new
products coming out of its labs seems too small to offset the sales lost to
cheaper copycat products. Making matters worse, cash-strapped governments in
Europe are negotiating hard to keep a lid on prices.
So it is probably a good thing that Joseph Jimenez, who took
over as CEO in 2010, thrives on competition. Trained as a competitive swimmer
during his university years, the 51-year-old American enjoys a fast-paced
environment. His previous experience in the consumer goods industry, including
H.J. Heinz Co., also came in handy for the top job at Novartis. Mr. Jimenez,
who had no scientific background when he started, took a crash course on the
pharmaceutical business, sitting down every morning with company scientists to
learn about Novartis's drugs, their discovery and development, and the diseases
they treat
- The industry needs to spend more money on R&D and less on sales and marketing.
- People would spend time writing very large Power Point presentations rather than talking to payers or helping regulators understand what we were doing at Novartis.
- I really believe that in the future, companies like Novartis are going to be paid on patient outcomes as opposed to selling the pill.
- We don't stop delivery of lifesaving drugs, but price cuts create a disincentive for us to build sales force.
- We are looking at traditional growth markets like China, Russia, Brazil and India. But we also believe that Africa, particularly sub-Saharan Africa, is going to be a very strong growth market. Maybe not in the next five years but five to 15 years.
A version of this article appeared January 2, 2013, on page B5 in the U.S. edition of The Wall Street Journal, with the headline: At Novartis, the Pill Is Just Part of the Pitch.
(cont.)
All-Star Large Pharma Marketing Team of the Year: AndroGel

It might be exaggerating to say that AbbVie—Abbott's new break-out pharma division—overcame a host of challenges to establish AndroGel as the preeminent product in the low-testosterone category. Or maybe not.
AbbVie took a taboo topic and, via a cagey media-and-marketing presence, rendered it less wince-inducing among its target audience. It did so at a time when a number of critics voiced their concerns that the marketing and use of testosterone-boosting products had gotten ahead of the science.
“We don't have any evidence that prescribing testosterone to older men with relatively low testosterone levels does any good,” the National Institute on Aging's Dr. Sergei Romashkan told the AP in September. AndroGel's type of testosterone therapy was approved by the FDA in 2000, but the products still had to contend with a branding challenge: convincing men with low or no testosterone that their condition (known as hypogonadism) wasn't abnormal or anything to be ashamed of. (Más)
.../...
But the campaign's empathetic approach and consumer-friendly language resonate with the target audience.
According to IMS Health, in 2011 AndroGel held nearly 49% market share in its category. In 2012, AndroGel passed the $1 billion sales mark in nine months (a 20% jump over the year-ago period), with 3.3 million scripts dispensed, an 18% jump.

"Low T drug sales in the U.S. reached nearly $2 Billion a year
(ending October 2012) and that the $1.37 Bn in sales of Androgel
represent about 70% of that total. In fact,
Androgel sales increased 19% over that period thanks no doubt
to direct-to-consumer (DTC) marketing coupled with physician marketing."
Low testosterone may be overlooked
Low testosterone, or hypogonadism, is a condition which occurs when testosterone (T) levels in your body fall below normal. Millions of American men are estimated to have low testosterone, but it may be overlooked because the symptoms are subtle and similar to those caused by other medical conditions.
“…urging men to know their testosterone levels ("Drive for five") is another
example of how pharmaceutical companies manipulate numbers to suggest that more
of us require treatment than would otherwise be the case. How do they do this?
By influencing treatment guidelines recommended to physicians by their
professional societies such as the Endocrine Society Clinical Practice
Guideline for Testosterone Therapy in Adult Men with Androgen Deficiency
Syndromes (find it here).
Here's a screen shot of the financial disclosure page of
that guideline:

Six out of the seven task force members have received
payments from Abbott Laboratories and other pharma companies. According to the
Institute of Medicine (IOM) Standards for Trustworthiness of practice
guidelines, none, or at most a small minority, of guideline development group
members should have conflicts, including services from which a clinician
derives a substantial proportion of income. In particular, says IOM, the chair
and co-chair should not have conflicts. Shalender Bhasin, M.D. -- the task
force chair for the Endocrine Society Clinical Practice Guideline for
Testosterone Therapy -- received consultation fees from GSK and Merck and
research grants and "Other Research Support" from Abbott Laboratories,
Ligand, and Merck.
This, no doubt, is a "conflict of interest"
regarding when physicians should "measure up" their male patients;
i.e., perform a test to measure their testosterone levels. In the recent past,
another conflict of interest may have been at play because Abbott both marketed
Androgel and supplied the testosterone testing services. Now that Abbott Labs
and AbbVie are separate companies, there is no conflict of interest between
Androgel promotion (handled by AbbVie) and testosterone testing (handled by
Abbott Labs, I assume).
