• Merck recently settled for another $950 million in the on-going debacle that Vioxx has become. This settlement was about minimising side-effects and marketing unapproved uses. Approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 1999, Vioxx became Merck’s third largest-selling drug by 2003, generating $2.5 billion in annual sales. This recent decision follows $4.85 billion in settlements to resolve patient lawsuits over Vioxx and the payment of undisclosed sums to the states of Florida, New York and South Carolina.
