QUICK GUIDE TO THE CODE FOR HEALTH PROFESSIONALS

The pharmaceutical industry in the United Kingdom is committed to operating in a professional, ethical and transparent manner to benefit patients by ensuring the rational use of medicines and supporting the provision of high quality healthcare. It is essential therefore that it promotes its medicines in an appropriate fashion.
The Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI) Code of Practice for the Pharmaceutical Industry, backed by statutory control, is the means by which the promotion of prescription medicines is regulated in the UK.
The Code of Practice is over fifty years old, the first edition being agreed in 1958. Since then it has been regularly updated and its scope greatly extended. The current edition came into operation on 1 January 2011.
