Control al "troll" ...

MAY 12, 2011 BY RICH

Do not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.

Astra Zeneca’s Twitter chat was a great first step but unfortunately a troll was lurking and tried to take over. I ran into this troll yesterday on Twitter and while it seems that he has nothing better to do than spew bile at pharma it a reason that pharma has to prepare for these people who are so spiteful that they go out of their way to spit venom.

No matter what you do the drug industry is always going to have people who are going to go out of their way to throw arrows at every opportunity. When I was in charge of Sarafem eMarketing and launched a message board 99% of the posts were positive but there was that 1% who accused of everything from global warming to unsolved crimes.

Can you make peace with these people ? The answer to that is no. When hatred runs that deep rational thought is no longer valid to them therefore it is essential that anyone working in social media and healthcare be trained on how to handle people like these. Here are some guidelines:

  • (1) Don’t try to win them over, it’s too late. Don’t reach out to them because no matter what you do nothing is going to change their mind. All they want is to spread their poison and if you acknowledge them you have already lost.
  • (2) Use Twitter’s block function to block them or report them to Facebook as abuse.
  • (3) Ignore them at all costs.
