Approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 1999, Vioxx became Merck’s third largest-selling drug by 2003, generating $2.5 billion in annual sales. This recent decision follows $4.85 billion in settlements to resolve patient lawsuits over Vioxx and the payment of undisclosed sums to the states of Florida, New York and South Carolina. Florida alleged the company misled state officials about the drug’s safety.
  • Abbott announced it had set aside $1.5 billion related to settlement discussions involving the Depakote probe. Abbott sales reps were encouraged to market Depakote, an epilepsy drug, as a way to treat the agitation associated with dementia, a practice that actually makes things worse for elderly patients who are frail.
  • Glaxo is settling cases with the U.S. for $3 billion.
  • Amgen will pay $780 Million to settle suits on its sales.
