Microsoft Corp. co-founder Bill Gates and The Estée Lauder Companies Inc. chairman emeritus Leonard Lauder have launched the Diagnostics Accelerator venture through the Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation, pledging $30 million over three years for the development of tests for early detection of Alzheimer’s disease.

Funding will be available to researchers, charities and biotechnology companies across the world seeking diagnostics for early Alzheimer’s, which is expected to affect 131 million people globally by 2050, and the venture philanthropy plans to invest in slightly riskier projects even in the absence of rapid commercial returns.
