Several analysts asked White whether Abbott would take on additional acquisitions, given that the company spent more than $10 billion on deals last year. Abbott's other 2009 acquisitions included the purchase of eye-care company Advanced Medical Optics for nearly $3 billion.
White was not specific about the kinds of acquisitions Abbott might pursue. But he said the company would be "rather opportunistic and selective as we look at what kinds of things we continue to be interested in."
As one example, White said "emerging markets are clearly a priority" for Abbott. Many drugmakers, including Abbott, have been increasing their presence in countries like India and China.
