Antidepresivos...solo en casos severos.

WASHINGTON -(Dow Jones)- Patients with severe depression receive the most benefit from treatment with antidepressant medications while those with less severe symptoms see little or no benefit, according to a new analysis released Tuesday.

A group of researchers combined the results of six studies involving patients who ranged from mildly depressed to very severely depressed as rated on the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale, which doctors use to determine if a person is depressed. The analysis, which compared 718 patients assigned to an antidepressant or a placebo is published in this week's Journal of the American Medical Association. (Ver...)

Drug–placebo differences in antidepressant efficacy increase as a function of baseline
severity, but are relatively small even for severely depressed patients. The relationship between
initial severity and antidepressant efficacy is attributable to decreased responsiveness to
placebo among very severely depressed patients, rather than to increased responsiveness to
medication.
