Looking ahead, the Swiss drugmaker anticipates "record results in 2009" amidst "an increasingly challenging environment," with revenue from prescription products "expected to grow at a mid- to high-single-digit rate...in local currencies."
Vasella added that
"we will have certainly some businesses performing well and others having some impact from the economy...So we will use all means to improve productivity, but layoffs would be the last [thing] we would really implement."
