Según informa el diario PUBLICO el médico de origen mexicano Juán Luis Contreras, y otra investigadora, Judith Thomas del mismo centro, falsearon durante más de siete años los resultados de sus estudios. Amañaron sus experimentos sobre trasplantes de riñón en macacos y llegaron a publicar datos falsos hasta en 16 ocasiones según investigaciones del Gobierno de EE.UU. y la propia universidad.
En 1997 recibe el Sandoz Fellowship in Transplantation Award, ambos reconocimientos por parte de la American Society of Transplant Physicians y en 1998 el Young Investigator Travel Award from The Transplantation Society , y el 2000 Pharmacia/Upjohn Investigator Award from de American Society of Transplantation Surgeons
Habían recibido más de 20 millones de dolares de las arcas públicas para financiar su trabajo.
Tambien fondos derivados de acuerdos con la multinacional suiza Novartis.(NIH/Novartis Cooperative Research and Development Agreement 96-MH-01/NIHITC-0697)

La penalización:
Dr. Contreras has entered into a Voluntary Exclusion Agreement in which he has voluntarily agreed, for a period of three (3) years, beginning on June 17, 2009:
(1) To exclude himself voluntarily from any contracting or subcontracting with any agency of the United States Government and from eligibility or involvement in nonprocurement programs of the United States Government referred to as "covered transactions" and defined by 2 CFR Parts 180 and 376; and
(2) To exclude himself from serving in any advisory capacity to PHS, including but not limited to service on any PHS advisory committee, board, and/or peer review committee, or as a consultant.
