“It’s still early only three monthsbut I’d say the transition is going well,” he says of the process of settling in.

“Dan and I sat down and defined the roles and responsibilities. Obviously, I seek his advice and counsel on the key strategic issues. But I’m running the company and Dan is chairman and running the board of directors.”

En defensa de lo "outsider"...

Mr Jimenez believes his outsider’s eye may have been decisive in helping him progress at Novartis, in spite of his lack of any scientific background. His career has been almost entirely in fast moving consumer goods, notably foods, including lengthy stints running Heinz, first in the US and later in Europe.

Mr Jimenez attributes those characteristics partly to his youthful experience as a university swimmer and captain of the team at Stanford University, where he earned his bachelor's degree in economics. “I used to tell exhausted teammates that sometimes the only way out is through,” he recalls.

Mr Jimenez argues much of the improvement has come from deploying resources more effectively, most notably Novartis’s armies of salespeople. That process will accelerate in the years ahead. The gradual decline of Diovan – a drug prescribed mainly by general practitioners – will require fewer staff making regular sales trips to doctors’ surgeries.
