Morton Wylie, 73, claims he went from a £1 week National Lottery flutter to spending thousands of pounds a time on roulette machines in bookmakers.
The former Strathclyde Police officer and Royal Mail worker clams he lost £85,000 after taking Rotigotine, which was used to treat symptoms of the brain disease.
He is now seeking £100,000 damages in an action at the Court of Session in Edinburgh.
NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and consultant neurologist Dr Donald Grosset are contesting the case. Mr Wylie was assessed for and took part in a European wide trial of Rotigotine patch medication.
Dr Grosset was the principal investigator in the study, sponsored by pharmaceutical firm subsidiary, Schwarz Biosciences.
Mr Wylie, of Cumbernauld, Lanarkshire, was told about possible physical side effects but the potential for developing any addictions was not discussed.
The doctor and health board said the side effects discussed with him, and identified in a patient information sheet, were those known at the time.
Mr Wylie claims that he had never gambled to any significant extent before taking the drug.
Speaking last night from the home he shares with wife Morag, 72, Mr Wylie said he was forced to admit he had a problem when he had just £14 in the bank. "Up until that point I had only spent a pound a week on the lottery or a football coupon, " he said.
