Local Heroes
WHAT the Cabinet Office called “local heroes” included GlaxoSmithKline chief executive Andrew Witty. His knighthood will have helped cheer him up after events in November when his firm agreed to pay a record $3bn fine in the US.
This was to settle charges that GSK had cheated the US health system Medicaid by overcharging; paid doctors “advisory fees” to persuade them to prescribe drugs; tried to get drugs prescribed for conditions not approved by regulators, like selling anti-depressants as slimming aids; and marketed drugs with dangerous side effects.
