While the investigators reported an impresive-sounding 50 percent reduction in the risk of serious heart problems among the statin users, in reality everyone in the study had a low risk to begin with.
Only 1.8 percent of the subjects who took a placebo had a major cardiovascular problem during the study period. Among statin users, 0,9 percent did. In other words, the absolute risk of a serious cardiovascular problem (as opposed to the relative risk) was reduced by less than one percentage point.
“Absolute differences in risk are more clinically important than relative reductions in risk in deciding whether to recomend drug therapy,” The New England Journal of Medicine noted in an editorial accompanying a report on the study.

No está muy claro esto último de “cualquier causa” …accidentes de tráfico? Hechos violentos de fin de semana en barrios de Caracas?
Y añade también el comentario del Dr. Juan Colán, parte “interesada” pues es investigador del estudio en Venezuela:
“ en pacientes sanos con la adición de este medicamento, en un lapso de tiempo de menos de 2 años disminuyeron, en un 44%, los eventos cardiovasculares de morbilidad (es decir, accidentes cerebro vasculares , angina de pecho o infarto de miocardio…”
Era 44% o era 54%...?
Era “infarto al corazón”…? O era “accidentes cerebro vasculares, angina de pecho o infarto de miocardio…”?
