THE BILLION DOLLAR BATTLE

"LOSEC was developed by Astra after it was first discovered in 1979. It has an original mechanism for curing acid secretion: unlike Zantac, it is a genuinely new invention and not a copy of a existing cure. It took a complex route from the laboratory to the pharmacy, however. It was withdrawn from development in 1984 when laboratory rats developed developed tumours after being subjected to high dosages of the drug. For a time that killed the project. But within two years Astra had solved the problem and the project was up and running again. Two years leter, in 1988, the drug won its first regulatory approval, in Sweden. Other approvals followed."
